Getting from the Spokane Airport to Nelson/Emerald Lakes B& B Inn:

There is a shuttle service that will pick you up at the Spokane Airport and bring you directly to Nelson (where you can rent a car to use locally). The shuttle fare from the Spokane Airport to Nelson (or to Emerald Lakes B & B) is approximately C$50 one-way and C$100 round-trip. Taking the shuttle allows you to be able to sit back and enjoy the scenery. 

                     You might want to compare car rental fees from the Spokane Airport (be sure to have them give you the all-inclusive estimate) with taking the shuttle + auto rental from a rental office in Nelson (I am told it is cheaper).

                     (Note for winter visitors: We recommend that you inquire about road conditions and request snow tires and four-wheel drive if there has been heavy snow).

Option B: Flying into CASTLEGAR, B.C., Canada 

This charming intimate airport is a one-hour flight from the international airports of Vancouver (YVR) and Calgary (YYC). Either of these flights is a fantastic way to see the Rockies and/or British Columbia. The rental car agencies are just a few steps from where you enter the airport building after deplaning.

Getting from the Castlegar Airport to Nelson/Emerald Lakes B& B Inn:

Driving Directions from Castlegar Airport to Emerald Lakes B & B

1)      Go down the hill from the airport and turn RIGHT at the stop sign onto Hwy 3A

2)      Follow 3A for 45 kilometers (29 miles) to Nelson

3)      Drive through Nelson on 3A East following the signs (the direction of Balfour). The road will take you over the big orange bridge to the other side of the lake on 3A. You will be headed northeast in the direction of Balfour

4)      You will be driving approximately 14 kilometers (9 miles) north of Nelson. The house numbers run consecutively as you travel north from the town. Start watching closely when you hit the 4000 range.

5)      The streets just before us are Dvorjetz, then Crescent Bay Road. Once you pass Crescent Bay Road start to slow down and when you see the yellow sign showing a road merging, turn on your right turn signal. Be sure that no one is close behind you as the turn is sharp. Turn right onto Sundance Road.

6)      Once you have turned onto Sundance Road, you will be able to see the roof of the house. We are the last road on the right. There is a large oval green sign saying “Emerald Lakes”. 

Option C: Flying into the Nelson Aiport 

For those with small planes or people who would like to rent a small plane or helicopter to bring them here, there is a small airport near downtown Nelson. Information regarding this airport is available by going to:  http://www.flynorth.com/html/CZNL.htm

 Driving Directions from CALGARY to Emerald Lakes B & B:  

There are several routes from Calgary to Emerald Lakes B & B. They are all between 7 ½ and 8 hours in driving time. 

Driving Time:                                     approximately 7 ½ to 8 hours

Distance:                                            638 km (396 miles) 

  1. Calgary through Cranbrook
  2. Calgary through Revelstoke
  3. Calgary through Fernie

A. Driving Directions from Calgary to Emerald Lakes B & B through Cranbrook

      1)      Take the TransCanada (Hwy #1) from Calgary passing through Banff National    

             Park to Highway 93 (Turnoff for Radium, Invermere, Cranbrook)

2)      South of Fairmont Hot Springs, Hwy 93 turns into Hwy 95

3)      Take Hwy 95 through Cranbrook where it connects with Hwy 3

4)      Follow Hwy 3 to Creston

5)      You can go two ways from Creston: 

TAKING THE FERRY from Creston

      a.   Follow Hwy 3A north from Creston to Kootenay Bay

b.   At Kootenay Bay, take the free ferry ride over to Balfour

c.       From Balfour continue south on 3A

d.      You will pass Kokanee Creek Park and we are just a short distance further. The house numbers will be dropping. You are looking for 4294 (house numbers run consecutively along the lake regardless of street names). If  you  look down you will see our oval green sign from the back. Take your  next left which is Sundance Road.

e.       After turning onto Sundance Road, you will be able to see the roof of the       house. We are the last road on the right (toward the lake). You will see the       oval green sign saying “Emerald Lakes” 

      DRIVING THROUGH NELSON from Creston

a.       From Creston, stay on Hwy 3 to go West over the famous Kootenay Pass

b.      At Salmo, turn right onto Hwy 6

c.       Continue on Hwy 6 for 30 minutes till you reach Nelson

d.      Drive through Nelson on 3A East following the signs (the direction of Balfour). The road will take you over the big orange bridge to the other side of the lake on 3A. You will be headed north in the direction of Balfour

e.       You will be driving approximately 9 miles north of Nelson. The house numbers run consecutively as you travel north from the town. Start watching closely when you hit the 4000 range

B. Driving Directions from Calgary to Emerald Lakes B & B through Revelstoke

Guests may wish to drive from Calgary to Revelstoke, take the free ferry across Arrow Lake and come to Emerald Lakes from the north. 

1)      Take the TransCanada (Hwy #1) from Calgary passing through Banff National Park, Banff, Lake Louise, Kicking Horse Pass, Golden, Revelstoke

2)      From Revelstoke, take the Galena Bay ferry south to Hwy 23.

3)      Go south on Hwy 23 to Nakusp

4)      From Nakusp, take Hwy 6 to New Denver

5)      From New Denver, take Hwy. 31A to Kaslo

6)      From Kaslo head south on Hwy 31 to Balfour.

7)      From Balfour continue south on 3A

8)      You will pass Kokanee Creek Park and we are just a short distance further. The house numbers will be dropping. You are looking for 4294 (house numbers run consecutively along the lake regardless of street names). If you look down you will see our oval green sign from the back. After seeing the oval green sign, take your next left (toward the lake) which is Sundance Road

C.                 Driving Directions from Calgary to Emerald Lakes B & B through Fernie 

  1. Take Hwy 2 south to Fort Macleod
  2. Turn right onto Hwy 3 going west. Hwy 3 is also known as the Crowsnest Highway
  3. Take Hwy 3 NW for 8 miles to Fernie
  4. From Fernie continue west on Hwy 3 to Creston
  5. From Creston, stay on Hwy 3 to go west over the famous Kootenay Pass
  6. At Salmo, turn right onto Hwy 6
  7. Continue on Hwy 6 for 30 minutes till you reach Nelson

If the signs at Creston indicate that the Kootenay Pass is closed or if you prefer a scenic route, take the following route: 

a.      At Creston, turn north onto Hwy 3A

b.      Continue until you reach the Kootenay Bay ferry (“longest free ferry ride in the world”)

c.      Take the ferry from Kootenay Bay to Balfour

d.      After getting off the ferry, take 3A toward Nelson

e.      You will pass Kokanee Creek Park and we are just a short distance further. You are looking for 4294 (house numbers run consecutively along the lake regardless of street names). If you look down you will see our oval green sign from the back. Take your next left (toward the lake) which is Sundance Road. 

Driving Directions from Vancouver to Emerald Lakes B & B

 Driving Time:                                     approximately 8 ¼  hours

Distance:                                            671 km (417 miles) 

1)      Take the TransCanada (Hwy #1) to Hope

2)      Then take Hwy 3 which goes through Princeton, Osoyoos, Grand Forks, Castlegar

3)      At Castlegar, take 3A toward Nelson

4)      Drive through Nelson on 3A East following the signs (the direction of Balfour). The road will take you over the big orange bridge to the other side of the lake on 3A. You will be headed north in the direction of Balfour

5)      You will be driving approximately 9 miles north of Nelson. The house numbers run consecutively as you travel north from the town. Start watching closely when you hit the 4000 range.

6)      The streets just before us are Dvorjetz, then Crescent Bay Road. Once you pass Crescent Bay Road start to slow down and when you see the diamond shaped yellow sign showing a road merging from the right, turn on your right turn signal. Driving Directions from Seattle to Spokane 

Driving Time:                         approximately 4 hours to Spokane (7 ¼ to Emerald Lakes)

Distance(Seattle to Nelson):    700 km (435 miles) 

1)      Take I-90 from Seattle to Spokane

2)      Exit I-90 at Exit #281

3)      Head north on Hwy. 2

4)      Follow directions below for Spokane to Emerald Lakes from 2)

Driving Directions from Spokane to Emerald Lakes B & B

Driving Time:                                     approximately 3 ¼  hours

Distance:                                            251 km (156 miles) 

1)      From Spokane airport, take I-90 east to exit #281 for Hwy 2 (Newport exit)

2)      Head north on Hwy 2

3)      Take a left onto Hwy. 211 and continue for 45 minutes

4)      Highway 211 merges with Hwy. 20 North & then eventually turns into Hwy. 31

5)      Continue on Hwy. 31 north through Ione and Metaline Falls

6)      At Nelway, you will cross the boarder into Canada (this crossing opens at 6 a.m. and closes at midnight); Those entering Canada will be checked at the border so make sure you have an ID with you. If you have a passport, you may want to bring it along.

7)      Continue on the same road north till you reach a “T” intersection and turn left onto Hwy. 3 West

8)      Continue on Hwy 3 West heading north to Salmo

9)      From Salmo, head north on Hwy 6 for about 30 minutes until reaching Nelson

10)  Go through Nelson on 3A following the signs that say to Balfour (the road will be turning left and going downhill at the Heritage Inn. Cross over the big orange bridge to the opposite side of the lake

11)  From the bridge you will be driving approximately 9 miles north from Nelson. The house numbers run consecutively as you travel north from the town. Start watching closely when you hit the 4000 range.

12)  The streets just before us are Dvorjetz, then Crescent Bay Road. Once you pass Crescent Bay Road start to slow down and when you see the yellow sign showing a road merging, turn on your right turn signal. Be sure that no one is close behind you as the turn is sharp. Turn right onto Sundance Road.

13)  Once you have turned onto Sundance Road, you will be able to see the roof of the house. We are the last road on the right. There is a large oval green sign saying “Emerald Lakes”.
